Fire Extinguishers Guide To The Various Types Available

Powder Extinguishers 

Dry powder fire extinguishers can be used on a wide variety of fires. They are safe for use on wood, textiles, electric fires and with flammable liquids. Furthermore, the dry powder fire extinguishers cannot, however, be used on kitchen fires involving cooking oils.

AFFF Foam Fire Extinguishers 

The AFFF foam fire extinguishers are ideal for fires involving flammable liquids or combustible materials. The foam in these instances helps the fire from relighting once it has been put out.

Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers 

These are ideal for use on soft furnishings and burning oil fires. They should not be used near electrical systems or flammable gases. For your information, this type of fire extinguisher is ideally suited for the kitchen area.

C02 Fire Extinguishers 

Perfect for use on flammable liquids and electric fires. They should not be used however with fires involving cooking oils.

Water Fire Extinguishers 

Great for putting out flames on wood, soft furnishings, paper fires and carpets. Again these should not be used on fires involving flammable liquids or cooking oils.

Fire Blankets 

These can also be used to extinguish a small fire, the majority are used for fires in the kitchen area. Furthermore, they can also be used to wrap around a person as they are highly flame-resistant.

Fire Extinguisher Classes 

A – These are used on all solid materials, wood, textiles, curtains furniture and plastics.

B – These are for flammable liquids and solids.

C –  Fires which involve natural mains gas, liquid petroleum, butane, propane, LPG, medical or industrial gas.

D – For fires which involve metals, powdered metals (in situations where water is ineffective or dangerous)

Electrical Fires – These are usually caused by a source of ignition which will feed the fire until removed. The supply should always be isolated before fighting this type of fire.

Class F – Used for dealing with high temperatures 360 degrees Celsius, for example, cooking oils.
